Closing up Shop

Well, I hope this helped the 7 readers I had during this trip. I appreciate the comments and hope that you enjoyed it. Since my life isn't that interesting, returning for the trip is a clear point to stop blogging. I will however leave the link up for another week or two and possibly add some photos as they begin to be tagged on facebook.

Delegate of the Day

This segment will be used throughout the trip. Each day the delegate (I know this is starting to sound kind of electoral. But we're part of a delegation. So, Yes. Delegate.) who had the most interesting thing happen to them will be selected for this section. With this will come a photo from the day, quotes, and other information in supplement to my daily postings.

6/15 Dan Gould

Today was a relatively uneventful day but one thing stood out in my mind. Dan Gould has some type of circulation problem and it was real cold outside. He had beer spilled on his seat and had to use his blanket to whipe it up in a classic situation of your damned if you do and damned if you don't. He didn't complain or yell at the old alchy who spilled on him. Good restraint Dan. Cheers!

6/14 Kevin Shaker

It was tough not to select one of the big winners at the casino for today's delegate. However, it should be noted the ammount of money Kevin Shaker is spending on this trip. His casino losings just added to the lore of Kevin's inability to show fiscal restraint. He was quoted as saying, "I just love spending money." Cheers Shake!

6/13 Nick Starr, Dave Quackenbush

These guys brought soccer balls and goalie gloves for the kids in Soweto. I can imagine that was the biggest mark we left on the Soweto township and that should be noted. Cheers guys.

6/12 Dave Fitzpatrick

Dave held down the fort at the flag as I mentioned in my USA England blog entry. Cheers to him because those Brits are mad serious or at least they think they are. They think they are more serious fans than us because they win alot of games and get their really early. But in reality, they can't even stop the simplest of goals.

6/11 Michael Jones

Mike is today's delegate of the day because he created the clutch ID badges that we all wear. Today, they finally came in handy for something other than looking stylish and telling people that we not only are tourists but SUPER TOURISTS. Today, we convinced security that we could use the VIP parking and drop off point for our drop off and pick up from the game. In a world of it not being what you know but who you know, and being able to gain access by looking like you belong, we succeeded big time.

6/10 Our Driver MnFo

Today's delegate of the day is an honorary member of our delegation. He is our fearless driver and tour guide. For those of you who haven't traveled to South Africa (or any other backwards driving country for that matter), it should be established here and now that driving over here is scary as hell. Everything is reversed and people drive like maniacs. On top of that, there are people walking through traffic like you would never see in the United States.

Through all the chaos, very few people beep. It is definately a more polite and relaxed culture which I will adress in my "Phrase of the Day" section. this man took turns and parallel parked a huge bus in sitiations where he had to cut on going traffic that he could only hope would stop. Luckily, people do stop. But this gentleman is a master of his craft and a great resrouce for local questions. For this reason, he is today's delegate of the day.

6/8-6/9 Dr. Daniel Dexter Covell

Our inaugural delegate of the day is none other than our Academic Czar, Dr. Covell. Dr. Covell was the clear choice for the travel days because he was mysteriously upgraded to business class just hours before our transatlantic flight from New York To Dubai. Along with his premier seating, Dr. Covell also went 3 for 3 in our digital trivia competition on the plane. During one of his early victories, Dr. Covell celebrated his correctly amswering a question about the movie "funny girl" by giving a stirring rendition of Barbara Striesand's "People." His knowledge of multiple verses and pitch would make even the most seasoned crooners tip their caps.

Upon Finding out his selection, Dr. Covell was quoted as saying, "After today's achievements, the only thing that could top the rush I felt would be a US victory in the World Cup, or at least the England match on Sunday."

Phrase of the Day

Every day has a defining phrase. During our time in South Africa, this will be no different. Look here for the current phrase of the day.

Update: I was thinking about killing this character off but I have some time today to recap some of the great lines of the trip, most of which have been previously referenced.
